Mina’s Cabbage Soup

This recipe has been passed down from my mother-in-law and is a family fave! It’s more of a stewp, than a soup tho! It is a meal in itself! My Ma-in-law would cook this up for her very large family on a cold fall or winter’s day, and it is well-remembered! I hope you enjoy it too!


  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 med.onion chopped
  • 1/2 c. celery diced
  • 1/2 pepper chopped (red,green, whatever color you like)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 can 280z tomatoes diced
  • 2 x 5 1/2 oz tomato paste
  • 4 cups broth beef or chicken
  • 2-4 hot peppers
  • 3 tbsp parsley flakes
  • 2 c. raw potatoes diced
  • 1 small cabbage chopped


  1. In a very large pot, saute the meat with onion,celery and peppers in oil till browned.
  2. Add all other ingredients except potatoes and cabbge.Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Now add the potatoes, cook uncovered,another 30 minutes. Fish out the hot peppers if used.
  3. Add the cabbage and simmer covered for 1 hour longer.
  4. Enjoy with a nice crusty bun!
