Friday The 13th!

Posted on: July 13, 2012

Today is Friday July 13th and for some people think it’s an unlucky day! It seems this year is especially creepy with as there will be three such occurrences  in 2012, exactly 13 weeks apart.  One theory states that it is a modern amalgamation of two older superstitions: that thirteen is an unlucky number and that Friday is an unlucky day.

Thirteen is considered unlucky so the theory goes, because twelve is considered the number of completeness. Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least since the 14th century’s The Cantebury tales  and many other professions have regarded Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys or begin new projects. I don’t know about you but rarely do I start a project on a Friday but never gave it a thought! Monday seems like a good start day for diets, projects, vacations etc!

This is a Western society superstition as in Spanish speaking countries, Tuesday the 13th are thought to be unlucky! In Italy Friday the 17th is their unlucky day! Does anyone put much thought to this anymore? I don’t really think so but it’s fun to look back at history and why they came up with these superstitions. some people though won’t plan big business meetings, set wedding days or fly on a Friday the 13th!

For some people Friday the 13th means a bike ride to Port Dover! When I say bike, I mean motorcycle! On Friday the 13th, 1981, Chris Simons and approximately 25 friends, through word of mouth, got together at the Commercial Hotel {The Zoo}, now known as Angelos of Dover. It was in November and it was Friday the 13th. They had such a good time they decided they should do it every Friday the 13th. And so the tradition was born.

Every Friday the 13th thereafter, the number of people coming to the event has increased. Chris has a suitcase full of newspaper and magazine clippings regarding Friday the 13th and he has become somewhat of a celebrity because of it. Everywhere he goes, people have heard of Friday the 13th in Port Dover. Will you be joining him today?

So there you have it folks, whether you believe the superstition or take a joy ride to Port Dover, I hope your day is filled with sun and fun!
