Weekend Away!

Posted on: March 7, 2011

Well, what a busy weekend! We went to Oxford Michigan for the weekend for a belated birthday celebration with my sister Colette and her husband Greg! What fun we had. Let me tell you all about it!

We arrived on Friday evening to find Greg home alone and Colette on her way home from a visit with son Luc! Roger of course, was there to greet us with his wagging tail and kisses too! You don’t get to go to Colette’s and not have an encounter with Roger. He’s a huge dog, an american bulldog and has a bigger chest than me! Friday evening was a mellow one of catching up with a glass of wine or two,  or  RV’s if you are Colette and Denis! (Rye with Vernors). We had more than a few laughs for sure catching up on all the family news, grand-children and such!

Saturday morning started out with a call from Mom to give us the news of Benjamin Andre’ s arrival! What welcome news. Congratulations go out to Neil and Darah who finally had their baby boy at 9 lbs 8 oz…ouch! I hear he’s healthy as can be and should be screaming for more food anytime now! We chatted with Mom for a bit and then shortly after breakfast Colette and I headed out to do some vintage shopping!

The vintage shopping was fun, I hadn’t done that in a long time. We started out in Clarkson, a neat little village not too far from Colette’s place. We looked at antiques and I always gravitate towards dishes and art, Colette loves the furniture! We spotted a Salvation Army next door and decided to check it out. Am I ever glad we did. They had great stuff and really good bargains. We got each of the grand-kids a pair of jeans and a very cool raincoat for Heidi! It was practically brand new! Very nice find indeed!

After all the shopping and browsing, we went out to lunch at the Union Woodshop Smoke House! We both had the same thing, a blackened catfish sandwich on a toasted hoagie bun, topped with cole slaw! Man was that good! It was just delicious to the very last crumb! Sadly we didn’t have room for dessert but I knew there’d be some after dinner so that was ok by me! We did a little more shopping then headed back towards home!

Back to the house we found the guys had just got back from their adventure and having a beer. Greg had taken Denis on a tour of the rural area and showing him some farms and some real estate, right up Denis’ alley. I believe there was talk that they stopped at the oldest restaurant in Michigan as well, The White Horse I believe…right Colette?

So let me tell you about this dinner…we had Colette’s famous 24 hour ribs, balsamic Asparagus, baked sweet potatoes, and a tossed salad with maple dressing! All I can say is Wow! After all this food we had a german chocolate cake from a local bakery, again Wow! We forgot the leftovers in her fridge too! We were to take that cake home! I can taste it right now!

Like all good things, our fun weekend had to come to an end! We had a great time at Colette and Greg’s  as always, and look forward to our next visit with them! Living far away from each other means being grateful for any time you do have together!

Sweetest regards,

Sweet Marie

the restaurant Greg took Den too is the old white horse Inn,in Metorma.
The woodshop in Clarston was voted best restaurant in Detroit 2011,and does not take reservations(roughly 1 hour from canadian border, nice drive on a Sunday)…….I am happy to have shared a great weekend with you both, and also happy to share the dry rub for my famous ribs and sauces when your ready, thank you for sharing your time, and your blog.CF./Michigan

Thanks Colette, I knew you’d reply the name of the restaurant!! I will be posting the rib recipe in mere moments!

also if you put whole cloves of garlic underneath the ribs the garlic will infuse while cooking, do not put dry rub on frozen ribs, a great side dish is sweet patatoe fries with a little chipotle & cayenne sprinkled on a cookie sheet with a little olive oil, very healthy.
thank you for sharing the rib recipe, have many variations, still think a rib cook off held in our huge back yard would be the hottest ticket, have a great day Marie you are sweet for sure. Colette/Oxford,Mi

I’m in for a rib-off…give the date and time!
